The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Nestled in the heart of Kansas City, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is an absolute gem for photographers. Its iconic architecture, lush gardens, neoclassical facade, and extensive art collection create a visually stimulating backdrop for portraits. Meanwhile, the expansive Sculpture Park, featuring breathtaking artwork amidst green landscapes, offers endless opportunities for creative photo compositions. With permission, you can even capture striking images inside the museum, where carefully curated artworks provide an artistic atmosphere.
Tip: I prefer to photograph in the morning when shooting at the Nelson. There are fewer photographers and virtually no wedding parties at this time. Evening shoots are beautiful, but more people are vying for the perfect spots.
Additional Information: The museum allows photography and videography with phones or small personal cameras, but tripods, monopods, and selfie sticks are prohibited. I didn't see any information about photo permits online, but if you plan to shoot on the museum grounds, they would like you to check in with the staff.

Tip: Get pullback shots of your subjects under the giant trees.
Additional Information: Loose Parks requires a permit for still and commercial video shoots and professional photographers conducting business on public property via photo shoots. Permit fees for family or portrait shoots at Loose Park are $25/hour. Get your permit. Also, if you plan to use the rose garden as a backdrop, it has rules and time restrictions. Plus, you'll need to work around weddings.
Hours: 5 a.m. - Midnight, but the parking gates lock at 10 p.m.

Additional Information: The West Bottoms is the haunted house district in Kansas City, so consider that for evening shoots during the Halloween months. Also, remember that the buildings aren't all studios and storefronts. Some people live in those spaces and might not love the idea of strangers walking on their front porches or driveways. And yes, I learned that lesson the hard way.
The Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

Additional Information: The museum allows photographs in all areas of the Museum and Memorial except for the films or where otherwise noted. However, it doesn't permit tripods, selfie sticks, and standalone lighting in the museum. Drones are allowed on the exterior grounds of the Museum and Memorial, but drone operators must be licensed as required by the FAA. They must inform the proper authorities as appropriate about operational plans.
