Find a Great Spot in Downtown Kansas City for Senior Pictures or Family Photos

In Kansas City, history meets modernity, and beauty surrounds you at every turn. Whether you're a professional photographer looking for stunning backdrops downtown or want to capture a special family photo in one of our parks, our beautiful city has many options. In this blog, we'll explore seven spots within the metro that are some of the best photoshoot locations in Kansas City. From urban landscapes to serene natural settings, I've got you covered.

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Nestled in the heart of Kansas City, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is an absolute gem for photographers. Its iconic architecture, lush gardens, neoclassical facade, and extensive art collection create a visually stimulating backdrop for portraits. Meanwhile, the expansive Sculpture Park, featuring breathtaking artwork amidst green landscapes, offers endless opportunities for creative photo compositions. With permission, you can even capture striking images inside the museum, where carefully curated artworks provide an artistic atmosphere.

Tip: I prefer to photograph in the morning when shooting at the Nelson. There are fewer photographers and virtually no wedding parties at this time. Evening shoots are beautiful, but more people are vying for the perfect spots.

Additional Information: The museum allows photography and videography with phones or small personal cameras, but tripods, monopods, and selfie sticks are prohibited. I didn't see any information about photo permits online, but if you plan to shoot on the museum grounds, they would like you to check in with the staff.

Loose Park

Couples shot at Loose Park.

Loose Park is a must-visit location for a photo shoot for nature enthusiasts and lovers of open spaces. Known for its stunning rose garden, this 75-acre urban park offers a variety of backdrops for your shots. During spring, the garden bursts with vibrant colors as thousands of blooming roses create a kaleidoscope of beauty. In the fall, the changing foliage provides a warm and rustic ambiance. The park's picturesque pond, stone bridges, and tree-lined paths add depth and serenity to your compositions. Whether you're capturing candid moments or staging an elaborate photo, Loose Park is an ideal location that offers natural beauty in every season.

Tip: Get pullback shots of your subjects under the giant trees.

Additional Information: Loose Parks requires a permit for still and commercial video shoots and professional photographers conducting business on public property via photo shoots. Permit fees for family or portrait shoots at Loose Park are $25/hour. Get your permit. Also, if you plan to use the rose garden as a backdrop, it has rules and time restrictions. Plus, you'll need to work around weddings.

Hours: 5 a.m. - Midnight, but the parking gates lock at 10 p.m.

Admission: Free unless you'd like to rent out a shelter.

The Country Club Plaza

As an iconic shopping district and architectural marvel, the Country Club Plaza is a haven for photographers seeking an urban backdrop. Inspired by the architecture of Seville, Spain, this outdoor shopping center boasts stunning fountains, intricate mosaics, and elegant Spanish-style buildings. The Plaza's ornate details and European charm provide a unique and photogenic atmosphere. The vibrant lights during the holiday season add a charming touch to any photo shoot. Whether you're capturing fashionable street shots or showcasing the lively atmosphere, the Country Club Plaza offers many opportunities for creative photography.

Tip: Incorporate the colors of the beautiful mosaics, and style your clients in a color palette that will be cohesive.

Additional Information: Designed in 1922 as the nation's first suburban shopping district, it's since transformed into an open-air public art gallery that melds the best of the Old World and the New. Download the Art Guide to make planning easier.

Kaw Point Park

Kaw Point Park is the ideal choice if you're looking for a location that combines natural beauty and historical significance. Situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, this park offers breathtaking views of the water meeting the horizon. The expansive green spaces, walking trails, and peaceful riverbanks create a tranquil environment. Additionally, the park features historical markers and interpretive signs that share the story of Lewis and Clark's expedition.

Tip: Remember the sunset over the Kansas River, or incorporate the towering Kansas City skyline in your shots for a stunning blend of nature and urbanity.

Additional Information: The park hosts events and weddings, so plan accordingly. Download the park map.

Hours: 7 a.m. - 10 p.m. daily

Admission: Free

The West Bottoms

For photographers seeking an edgier and more unconventional setting, the West Bottoms district delivers an industrial charm perfect for unique photoshoots. Once a thriving hub for Kansas City's meatpacking industry, this area showcases a juxtaposition of dilapidated warehouses, vintage architecture, and street art. The raw and gritty aesthetic of the West Bottoms offers endless possibilities for creative compositions. Experiment with urban fashion shoots and grungy portraits against textured walls, or utilize vibrant murals as eye-catching backdrops. This hidden gem will add an urban edge to your portfolio.

Tip: Use the lines of the architecture to enhance the composition of your images.

Additional Information: The West Bottoms is the haunted house district in Kansas City, so consider that for evening shoots during the Halloween months. Also, remember that the buildings aren't all studios and storefronts. Some people live in those spaces and might not love the idea of strangers walking on their front porches or driveways. And yes, I learned that lesson the hard way.

The Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse yourself in the tranquility of the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. This expansive 300-acre park is a true haven for nature-loving photographers. The diverse landscapes, including woodlands, prairies, and lush gardens, provide a wealth of opportunities for capturing the beauty of flora and fauna. The Arboretum's picturesque trails, rustic bridges, and charming structures add depth and character to your photographs. Whether you're shooting macro shots of delicate flowers or capturing candid moments amidst scenic vistas, the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens offers plenty of peaceful spots for your photoshoot.

Tip: Shoot through petals and foliage to add depth to your images.

Additional Information:

The Arboretum requires a permit for portrait or posed photography. Visit its website for rules.

The Liberty Memorial

Couples shot from a session at the Liberty Memorial.

The Liberty Memorial holds immense historical significance as the National World War I Museum and Memorial. As you set foot on this hallowed ground, you can't help but feel a sense of reverence for the countless sacrifices made during the Great War. The impressive architecture and design of the memorial, with its lofty central tower and grand colonnade, create a dramatic backdrop that evokes pride and solemnity. This rich historical context provides a great spot that adds depth and emotion to any photo shoot.

Beyond its historical importance, the Liberty Memorial boasts stunning panoramic views of the Kansas City skyline. As you ascend to the top of the tower, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see. The city's modern architectural marvels blend harmoniously with the memorial's timeless elegance, offering a striking contrast that's visually captivating.

Moreover, the Liberty Memorial is surrounded by beautiful green spaces and meticulously manicured gardens. These picturesque landscapes provide a great place for your photo shoot. Whether looking for a romantic spot for engagement photos or a tranquil setting for family portraits, the memorial's surroundings offer a peaceful respite from the urban hustle and bustle. The combination of lush greenery and the memorial's grandeur provides a harmonious balance that enhances the visual appeal of your photography.

Tip: Wait until the blue hour and the downtown lights come on to capture the city's energy as it unfolds beneath you.

Additional Information: The museum allows photographs in all areas of the Museum and Memorial except for the films or where otherwise noted. However, it doesn't permit tripods, selfie sticks, and standalone lighting in the museum. Drones are allowed on the exterior grounds of the Museum and Memorial, but drone operators must be licensed as required by the FAA. They must inform the proper authorities as appropriate about operational plans.
