Out of the Shadows

OUTDOOR KANSAS CITY COUPLES PHOTOGRAPHY

I was the kid who sat in the very back of the class. Better yet, if there was an empty corner, I’d make a beeline to it and melt into the walls. Or I’d cram myself against the side of the bus and put my backpack on top of me. Anything to hide.

I’m naturally shy, and while I want to see, I don’t want to be seen. It’s ironic, because as a 6’1” female, I literally stick out everywhere I go.

But it dawned on me yesterday that perhaps my use of heavy shadows and pockets of light in my photography comes from my love of the corner — of wanting to sink into my surroundings. And for this particular couples session, my inclination led to photographs that give off the feeling that they are the last people on earth — completely isolated, and totally OK with it.
