Four Mistakes to Avoid While Preparing for Your High School Senior Photography Session

What's up, senior! You've made it to your last year of high school, and you've either already scheduled your senior portrait session or you're still hunting for that perfect photographer.

For your upcoming pictures, it's essential to avoid common mistakes that could dampen the experience and the outcome of your photo shoot.

After all, we all want good vibes and great pictures.

Planning Your Senior Session Last Minute

I get it. You're busy. Trust me. We all are. But one of the biggest mistakes is to prepare for your senior photography session at the last minute. Planning is vital to ensuring a stress-free and enjoyable experience. You want photos that capture the true you -- not something cookie-cutter that you can throw together at the eleventh hour.

To avoid procrastinating:

  1. Start planning well in advance of your desired photo shoot date.

  2. Discuss your vision and preferences with your photographer early on, so they can understand your personality and tailor your session accordingly.

  3. While your photographer should do most of the heavy lifting, consider the location, outfits, props, and any specific shots you have in mind.

By planning, you allow yourself time to select outfits that fit perfectly and communicate with your photographer so they can scout out the ideal location.

Overcomplicating Outfit Selection

Showcase your style and personality through outfit choices, but keep your wardrobe simple. Too many outfit changes can disrupt the session flow and waste valuable time.

Instead, opt for 2-3 timeless and versatile outfits that reflect your personality while ensuring the focus remains on you. Bring hats, jackets, or other accessories to quickly alter your look without completely changing your wardrobe.

Choose colors that complement your skin tone and avoid logos or busy patterns. Classic styles and simple outfits tend to age well and will help you avoid the 20-year cringe. (Ask your parents if you don’t know what I mean). Coordinate your wardrobe with your photographer's suggestions and the selected locations for a cohesive and visually pleasing photo collection.

Ignoring Professional Hair and Makeup

I know that in the age of TikTok and Instagram, every teen is a makeup and hair expert. Even my 8-year-old daughter knows more than I do about makeup application and current trends.

But unless you're a certified hair and makeup artist, I recommend leaving it to the professionals if it's within your budget.

It can make a significant difference in the outcome. An HMUA knows how to highlight your best features and what type of makeup to apply for photos to ensure you look stunning in every shot.

Be clear about your preferences with your hair and makeup artist, and consider scheduling a trial session before the actual shoot to ensure you achieve the desired look. Professional hair and makeup can boost your confidence and make you feel more at ease during the session, resulting in more natural and beautiful photographs.

Not Personalizing Your Session

Your senior photography session isn't just about great pictures; it's about showcasing your unique personality, interests, and achievements. Talk to your photographer to personalize the session to reflect who you are.

Discuss your passions and hobbies with your photographer, and brainstorm creative ways to incorporate them into the shoot. Whether it's posing with your favorite musical instrument, sports equipment, or favorite book, adding personal touches will make your photos more meaningful and unforgettable.

Your parents will share your senior photos with friends and family for years. Mine is still hanging in the stairwell of my childhood home decades later.

Remember that early planning, thoughtful outfit choices, professional hair and makeup, and personalized elements are the key ingredients to an excellent senior photography session. Embrace your senior year with confidence and allow your true self to shine through the lens, creating images you'll cherish forever.
